Chinese authorities have arrested a local government official and a businessman after a woman claimed she was sexually assaulted at a karaoke bar in Hangzhou following a company dinner. The claim, which centers on a gathering that included top executives and officials, has led to both suspects being dismissed from their positions and facing charges.
The alleged assault began when the woman was forced to the ground by one of the men, injuring her lower back. The authorities say the woman was coerced into drinking heavily before being taken to the karaoke lounge, where the violence allegedly unfolded.
While incidents of misconduct at company social events are not unheard of in China, arresting public officials in such cases is rarer, sparking significant public outcry. Thousands of comments on Weibo condemned the alleged abuse of power and called for a clear separation of business and personal obligations.
Social media engagement surged, with one trending topic drawing over 68 million views and several others amassing between one and six million views. A highlighted comment read: “Going to a drinks gathering does not mean consenting to be harmed, and drinking alcohol does not automatically consent to abuse.”
