Police said a 35‑year‑old woman was seriously injured after being bitten by a shark at Coogee Beach in Sydney.

According to New South Wales Police, emergency services were called on Saturday morning. The woman was pulled out of the water by beachgoers who began first aid and sustained significant injuries to her arm and leg.

She was airlifted to hospital by helicopter and several nearby beaches were closed as a precaution.

Eyewitness Nicola Logan described a massive pool of blood in the water and the sight of a ski paddler trying to bring her in.

The incident comes after a recent male diver fatality and other shark deaths around Australia, where over 1,300 records of attacks exist with 260 fatalities.

While many shark attacks are non‑fatal, coastal communities are now reviewing protective measures at popular surf and swimming spots.
