WASHINGTON — In a shocking event, two National Guard members were shot on Wednesday near the White House and now remain in critical condition. A law enforcement source speaking on the condition of anonymity confirmed this to AP.
Alongside these injuries, a suspect in custody also sustained injuries during the incident, although they are not considered life-threatening. Emergency responders acted quickly, transporting all three individuals to a local hospital.
The scene was secured with police tape while emergency vehicles were deployed, including helicopters hovering above as agents from the U.S. Secret Service and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives responded to the site. The National Guard troops stood by, maintaining a vigilant presence.
The Joint DC Task Force was confirmed to have responded to the incident following alert reports. Meanwhile, the Metropolitan Police Department announced they were also on the scene but had not provided additional details as the situation unfolded.
Mayor Muriel Bowser is reportedly monitoring the developments closely. At the time of the shooting, President Donald Trump was at his golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida.
The White House is aware and actively monitoring this tragic situation. The President has been briefed, stated White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.
This incident comes as hundreds of National Guard members have been deployed throughout Washington D.C. following President Trump's emergency order issued in August to federalize local law enforcement, resulting in heightened security and patrols across the capital.
