The Israeli military’s recent air strikes in Gaza claimed the lives of six civilians, including Ahmed Wishah, a correspondent for Al Jazeera. The killing of the reporter took place during a strike on a residential building in the Bureij refugee camp, which also claimed the lives of two other residents.
Al Jazeera condemned the attack, calling it a “heinous crime” and accusing the Israeli forces of targeting journalists. The network claimed Wishah’s murder violates international law and highlights a systematic policy of silencing the media. In response, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) stated that Wishah was a “terrorist in Hamas’ military wing” who served as a sniper, but offered no evidence to support this claim.
Hamas-run health ministry officials, whose figures the United Nations deems reliable, have reported 1,007 deaths in Gaza since the ceasefire that took effect in October. Humanitarian aid has been limited, with UN Secretary-General’s office noting that 81% of buildings have been damaged and that 70% of the population still lacks adequate shelter.
In addition to the Bureij strike, another overnight air strike on a home in the Sabra neighbourhood of Gaza City killed four civilians, including two children. Hospital staff and local residents report that the victims were innocent civilians with no ties to Hamas, underscoring the civilian toll of the conflict.
The latest waves of bombardment came amid accusations from both Israel and Hamas that each side had violated the ceasefire. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that he had directed the IDF to increase its control over Gaza to 70% of the territory, while Hamas officials repeatedly rejected disarmament plans.
Historical context highlights the ongoing cycle of violence that began with Hamas-led attacks on northern Israel in October 2023, which triggered a massive Israeli offensive. Over 70,000 people have been killed in Gaza since then, according to Gaza’s health ministry.
