SpaceX Rocket Spotted Off Christmas Island Coast
A Falcon 9 rocket from SpaceX has appeared off the coast of Christmas Island after landing in the Indian Ocean following a test flight from Texas on 24 July. The 52‑metre booster was transported to a fishing harbour near the island, where locals could see it up close.
David Watchorn, chair of the Christmas Island Tourism Association, first misidentified the object as ships en route to work before realising it was a rocket. “I thought I was looking at ships,” he told the BBC, adding that the sighting “is really incredible” and “a rocket, a space rocket.”
The unusually large vehicle sparked local fascination: workers sneaked out of the office to take a glimpse, and fishermen readied their boats to view the structure up close. Watchorn noted that “the more you look at it, the more fascinating it becomes” and expressed awe at what the rocket endured during its journey.
