Coach crash kills several people in Swiss Alps
A tourist coach overturned between Susch and Zernez in the Graubünden region of the southeastern Swiss Alps late Thursday afternoon, leaving at least one death and several injuries, local police say.
Local authorities deployed a large rescue team equipped with several helicopters. The coach carried 48 Dutch tourists on a day‑trip tour that began in the Netherlands and traveled through Austria into Switzerland.
The number of fatalities and injuries was not immediately released, but a spokesperson for the Dutch Association of Travel Companies said that a tour operator OAD could not yet confirm figures. Images posted on Swiss news sites show the coach lying on its side beside a narrow country road, with ambulances and rescue workers at the scene.
Zernez serves as the entry point for visitors to the Swiss National Park, a vast Alpine reserve that stretches more than 100 square kilometres across the Engadine valley. The bus crash just before its entrance into the park has attracted widespread concern from travelers and local officials.
Rescue teams continue to work at the site as authorities investigate the cause of the accident. Updates on the casualty count and condition of passengers are expected in the coming hours.
