The Thai prime minister, Anutin Charnvirakul, announced plans to introduce new gun control measures following a tragic shooting carried out by a 14‑year‑old that claimed eight lives and left 22 people injured.
In the early hours of Friday morning, the teenager first killed his grandparents, then gained access to Debsirin School in Nonthaburi where he opened fire on teachers and staff, registering a fatality count of eight and numerous injuries.
Police investigations revealed the firearm used belonged to the teen’s grandfather and was legally registered; however, the gun’s illegal presence in the school prompted questions about enforcement of existing controls.
The proposed legislation would restrict civilian access to firearms, limiting carry to government officials during duty, and would tighten enforcement against illegal possession.
Prime Minister Anutin expressed sorrow and frustration, stating the tragedy “shouldn’t have happened” and pledging reforms to prevent future incidents.
