OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — A tragic incident has struck Connors State College as sophomore basketball player Ethan Dietz passed away after a severe injury during a game. The school announced his death on Tuesday, following the injury that occurred in the second half of a game played Saturday in Texas.

According to the college's spokesperson, Shannon Rigsby, initial reports suggest that Dietz suffered a head injury during the game. However, further details remain unclear as the school continues to gather information.

The statement released by Connors State College celebrated Dietz, stating, “Ethan exemplified what it means to be a Cowboy, to value hard work and being part of a team.” As teammates and the college community come to terms with their loss, thoughts and condolences are extended to Dietz's family and friends.

In the wake of his tragic passing, several upcoming men's and women's basketball games have been canceled as a sign of respect and mourning. Dietz, who stood at 6-foot-8 and was a forward from Vilonia, Arkansas, had been averaging 11 points per game this season. In the last game he played, he scored eight points and recorded four rebounds.

To honor his memory, a vigil is set to take place on December 1 at the college's campus in Warner, Oklahoma, where his teammates and community will gather to pay their respects.
