SHREVEPORT, La. — A devastating mass shooting occurred in Shreveport, Louisiana, where a man killed eight children, including seven of his own, and injured two women in what authorities are calling one of the deadliest shootings in over two years.
Officials expressed their shock and sorrow during a news conference held outside the residence where the tragic events unfolded. Mayor Tom Arceneaux referred to the shooting as potentially the worst tragedy the community has ever faced and called for patience and prayers amidst the mourning.
Mourners gathered to honor the victims, leaving flowers and lighting candles at a prayer vigil nearby. It just makes you take your children and hug them and hold them and tell them how much you love them, said Kimberlin Jackson, who attended the vigil.
The bloodshed began before dawn, when the shooter, identified as 31-year-old Shamar Elkins, attacked a woman at one location before moving to a second residence where he shot and killed seven children. One child was found dead on the roof after trying to escape, while another jumped off and survived. State Representative Tammy Phelps emphasized the horror faced by first responders who arrived at the scene.
Shreveport Police Chief Wayne Smith stated, I just don’t know what to say, my heart is just taken aback. The deceased children were aged between three to eleven, described by family members as enthusiastic and friendly individuals.
Further investigations revealed that Elkins had a troubled history; he was involved in a firearms case back in 2019 but had no prior known domestic violence incidents. Reports suggested he and his wife were in the process of separating and due to appear in court shortly, indicating escalating tensions before the day of the shooting.
