Five people have died and tens of thousands have been left without power in Ukraine after intense Russian missile and drone attacks overnight, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said.

Four members of one family, including a 15-year-old girl, were killed by a strike in the village of Lapaivka as attacks mostly targeted the western region of Lviv.

One person also died in Zaporizhzhia. Zelensky stated that Russia fired more than 50 missiles and around 500 attack drones, with Ukraine's air force reporting a total of 549 targeted assaults.

In a statement, Russia's defense ministry claimed it had successfully executed a 'massive' strike on Ukrainian military and infrastructure.

Ukraine's neighbor Poland has responded by scrambling fighter jets to ensure the safety of Polish airspace, confirming the deployment of allied NATO aircraft.

The city of Lviv endured several hours of strikes, leading to the suspension of public transport services and the cutting of electrical supplies. Lviv's regional head, Maksym Kozytskyi, declared it the largest attack on the region since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022. He indicated that around 163 drones and missiles were detected in the region.

Kozytskyi noted the attack targeted residential buildings, hospitals, civilian industrial facilities, and gas transportation infrastructure, describing it as 'especially cynical' as Ukrainians typically begin heating their homes during this time.

Another family member of the deceased in Lapaivka suffered injuries along with two neighboring residents.

In addition to Lviv, areas including Ivano-Frankivsk, Chernihiv, Sumy, Kharkiv, Kherson, Odesa, and Kirovohrad were also reported attacked by Russian strikes, leaving substantial damage to Ukraine's energy infrastructure as winter approaches. Kyiv's energy ministry confirmed that overnight attacks caused significant disruptions and injuries in several regions.

As the situation develops, President Zelensky called for increased protection and rapid implementation of air defense agreements to counteract the aerial assaults on civilian areas.
