Trump Declares Immediate Repairs for Reflecting Pool as Algae and Vandalism Concerns Escalate

President Donald Trump announced that work to restore Washington’s historic Reflecting Pool would begin “immediately” after inspecting the site from his helicopter after returning from Camp David. The statement was posted to Truth Social on Sunday, the same day several police reports were filed alleging vandalism.

The pool, located between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument, was recently refilled and repainted in a fresh blue coat. Despite the overhaul, a green algae bloom has settled in, turning the water a bright hue and prompting the use of chemicals such as hydrogen peroxide to try to scrub the surface. Scientists confirm the algae species, Desmodesmus, is harmless, though the shifting ecosystem demands ongoing monitoring.

Vandalism claims have escalated. Ten individuals—five arrested and five cited—are alleged to have damaged the pool’s paint, with one accused of causing a “250‑foot long gash” to the granite facade. Washington DC Attorney Jeanine Pirro has vowed to prosecute anyone found responsible, urging the shadow of the criminal justice system to prevent future assaults on the monument.

Local news footage shows workers with long poles cleaning the pool, as the green algae is tackled and old paint peels. The sight of a dead duckling floating in the water raised questions about potential harm from the work or the environmental conditions. Environmental experts stress the need for continuous oversight to guard against invasive species or harmful bacteria that could emerge.

The federal Park Police have not yet confirmed arrest figures. However, senior Trump administration officials report 14 police reports filed last night, a number that underscores the growing tension around the monument. President Trump reacted to reports of vandalism by praising the the stunning beauty of the pool, calling out those who destroyed it as “deranged.”

With the 250th anniversary of the United States’ 4 July independence approaching, the presidential appeal underscores the symbolic importance of maintaining national heritage sites. The repair effort is set to start in the coming days, with workers already making preliminary visits to assess damage and plan restoration works.
