LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — A UPS plane crashed on takeoff from the airport in Louisville, Kentucky, igniting a huge fire on the ground, officials reported on Tuesday.

The Federal Aviation Administration indicated that the incident occurred at approximately 5:15 p.m. as the aircraft was departing for Honolulu. It was scheduled to operate from Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport.

Local police responded swiftly to reports of the crash near Louisville International Airport.

According to the Louisville Metro Police Department, there are reported injuries related to the incident.

Social media platforms showcased imagery of large plumes of black smoke rising into the sky.

The Louisville police emphasized the need for community safety by requesting that residents steer clear of the crash site. Following the incident, the Louisville Metro Emergency Services announced an extension of a shelter-in-place order to areas north of the airport up to the Ohio River.

Footage from local television stations displayed flames shooting into the air and a significant trail of smoke as firefighters worked diligently to control the fire.

The aircraft involved in the crash, a McDonnell Douglas MD-11, was manufactured in 1991 and owned by UPS.

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear provided updates on the situation via social media, acknowledging awareness of the incident. He stated, “First responders are onsite, and we will share more information as available. Please pray for the pilots, crew, and everyone affected. We will share more soon.”
