US soldier killed and one injured after Iranian attack in Iraq

US Central Command announced that a US service member was killed when a soldier was hit by the controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance that originated from an Iranian attack drone in northern Iraq, following a deadly strike on a Jordanian base that killed two US soldiers a day earlier.

Centcom said the incident occurred amid a series of escalating attacks between Washington and Tehran, which had caught up to the eighth day of sustained air and missile engagements.

In a separate audit of the Jordanian facility, Centcom identified “unidentified remains” and noted that an examination of the remains is underway.

Washington has re‑imposed its blockade of Iranian ports, while Tehran has declared the Strait of Hormuz closed and has targeted US allies after a preliminary cease‑fire collapsed in early July.

The US has repeatedly stated that its strikes are aimed at degrading Iran’s shipping‑support infrastructure in the strait and at punishing the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps for the attack on Jordan.

The death toll of US personnel in the conflict has reached 17, after a Navy pilot was declared dead earlier this month.

Over 50 people were killed and more than 500 wounded in Iranian‑operative strikes on the US’s last three weeks, the ministry has said.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei condemned the US’s “repeated breaches” of an earlier cease‑fire agreement, arguing that Washington’s actions undermine diplomatic stability.
