German prosecutors file charges

Berlin law firm Menaker, representing the suspect, said prosecutors served an indictment on Wednesday with no detail on the charges. German federal prosecutors acknowledged that someone was charged over the blast. German public broadcaster DW reports the accused allegedly led a team of seven accomplices in the operation that destroyed three of the four Nord Stream pipelines, used for transporting natural gas from Russia to Germany.
The identity of the saboteurs remained unclear after the attacks. Russia blamed the United States and United Kingdom, but no evidence links any state to the explosions. Ukrainian authorities deny any involvement, while many Ukrainians see the blowup as a heroic strike against a key Russian revenue source.
The suspect, named only Serhii K under privacy rules, had been arrested in Italy last summer and extradited to Germany in November. He has denied any role in the incident. A month after his arrest, a second Ukrainian suspect was detained near Warsaw on a separate German warrant.
The Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines stretched about 1,200 kilometres under the Baltic Sea. Germany halted the approval of Nord Stream 2 before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. In late September 2022, several explosions destroyed three pipelines, blowing out an enormous amount of methane and rendering the infrastructure inoperable.
