Venezuela’s baseball stadium turns into emergency shelter after devastating earthquakes

Two powerful earthquakes struck Venezuela last week, tearing into homes and infrastructure across the northern coast. Immediate after‑shock devastation left many families without shelter or essential supplies.

BBC correspondent Will Grant visited the makeshift camp set up inside a local baseball stadium in Catia la Mar. Survivors huddled under makeshift tents or sleeping outdoors, the stadium’s field offering space for those without houses.

The residents expressed optimism that authorities would soon provide temporary accommodation as part of the country’s reconstruction efforts. In the meantime, they largely depend on food and clothing donated by other citizens and aid organisations.

Local officials and international agencies are preparing to coordinate relief distribution and shelter planning for the displaced population. The situation underscores the urgent need for coordinated humanitarian response in regions affected by natural disasters.
