Breathing space By Melissa Kirsch Last week, a friend decided to read my tarot cards. It was a whimsical choice as neither of us had deep knowledge of tarot, but it was enjoyable to engage in a light-hearted activity during uncertain times. As we interpreted the cards, one phrase resonated with me: “Practice being present in the here and now. It’s all we have, and it’s a lot.” This sentiment can be interpreted in two ways. On one hand, the present moment brims with opportunities; there's no need to dwell in past regrets or future anxieties, as the now holds plenty. Conversely, the phrase speaks to a common refrain surfaced in stressful discussions: “It’s a lot.” This expression encapsulates a profound sense of overwhelm without divulging specifics, reflecting the general friction many feel these days. The expression “It’s a lot” became particularly noticeable during the early days of the pandemic, signifying our shared struggle to process incessant news cycles. Recently, I’ve noted a resurgence of this phrase in conversations, signaling our collective challenge to stay informed amidst the barrage of information. The urgency to constantly refresh news feeds makes it feel like a relentless race to keep up—or others choose to disengage, finding the news simply overwhelming.
