In brief
This weekend, thousands of children in Gaza City received a second dose of the polio vaccine, a vital initiative hampered by intense Israeli bombardments and the mass evacuation orders within northern regions. The vaccination campaign, which was originally scheduled to commence on October 23, faced postponements as the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF sought assurances for the safety of health workers amid the violence.
Reportedly, a substantial population, especially in northern Gaza, is at risk of missing out on the vaccinations, with around 15,000 children under 10 remaining inaccessible due to the ongoing conflict. The initial round of vaccinations in September had already covered significant portions of northern Gaza before the escalation in military operations against Hamas. Although the campaign received a humanitarian pause in Gaza City and reported approximately 58,604 vaccinations administered over the weekend, the overarching fears regarding the health crisis continue. The Gazan Health Ministry has echoed these numbers, affirming that the campaign will persist through Monday. However, COGAT, the Israeli government agency overseeing operations, stressed its commitment to facilitating the vaccination effort amid the chaos of war, marking a challenging intersection between public health initiatives and ongoing hostilities. In sum, while efforts are progressing in areas deemed safer, the risk of polio and potential outbreaks looms large for children trapped in the conflict zones.
