West Virginia communities gathered to honor the brave service of two National Guard members who were affected by a shooting incident in Washington, D.C. U.S. Army Spc. Sarah Beckstrom, 20, tragically lost her life, while U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, 24, remains hospitalized in critical condition.

West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey provided updates, confirming Wolfe’s very critical condition. Both service members were serving in D.C. as part of an initiative to enhance public safety in the capital.

In reaction to the incident, the governor issued a proclamation calling for a statewide moment of silence or prayer to be observed on Friday afternoon to honor Beckstrom and Wolfe. Flags are to be flown at half-staff in memory of Beckstrom.

Governor Morrisey expressed heartfelt sentiments, stating, “These two West Virginia heroes were serving our country and protecting our nation’s capital when they were maliciously attacked.” He praised their courage and dedication to service, calling them exemplary representatives of West Virginia.

A vigil took place on Thanksgiving night in Webster Springs, where community members gathered to pay their respects at a memorial wall honoring veterans shortly after the news of Beckstrom's death broke.

Beckstrom’s military journey began shortly after high school, just weeks after graduating from Webster County High School with honors in June 2023. She was recognized for her service as a military police officer with the 863rd Military Police Company and volunteered for Operation D.C. Safe and Beautiful, aimed at ensuring safety in the capital.

President Donald Trump praised her as an “incredible person,” reflecting the sentiment echoed by many friends and family who described her as selfless and dedicated.

In the days following the tragedy, the community's support for Wolfe has been palpable. The Berkeley County Sheriff shared a message from his family, thanking the public for their prayers and support during this challenging time.

The local schools, workplaces, and community centers have stepped up, commemorating the commitment of both service members through support and tributes, emphasizing their contributions within and beyond their military roles.

This event highlights the dangers faced by those serving in the military and the profound community support that rallies around their families during times of tragedy.
