NEW YORK (AP) — The recent election of Zohran Mamdani as New York City’s first Muslim mayor has sparked a significant reaction, particularly from Jewish communities. In response to concerns about rising antisemitism, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) has launched an initiative to monitor Mamdani's policies and personnel decisions.

The ADL emphasized its efforts to protect Jewish residents in New York City amid what it described as a period of increased antisemitism. Following the election, a poll indicated that around 60% of the Jewish vote went to Mamdani’s opponent, former Governor Andrew Cuomo, igniting discussions about Mamdani’s critiques of Israel during the campaign.

Some Jewish leaders and groups expressed concerns about Mamdani's affiliation with individuals perceived as having a history of antisemitism. Jonathan Greenblatt, the ADL’s national director, stated that they were worried about the potential influence of these associations on his administration.

Conversely, leaders from some pro-Palestinian Jewish organizations celebrated Mamdani’s victory, arguing that it was reflective of their community’s desire for change and progress. They condemned the fearmongering they attribute to certain Jewish institutions and leaders, calling for constructive engagement with the new mayor.

During his campaign, Mamdani was vocal in his criticisms of Israel’s actions in Gaza, describing them as genocide against Palestinians, but has also condemned acts of antisemitism. He expressed a commitment to uphold the safety of all New Yorkers, promising to increase funding for measures to prevent hate crimes.

Amid concerns and excitement around his leadership, figures in the Jewish community are urging for a collaborative approach to foster harmony and safety for all demographics amid the tumultuous political landscape.
