In brief

The remarkable life and legacy of Helen Schreider, a pioneering explorer who journeyed the length of the Americas in an amphibious vehicle with her husband, is celebrated following her recent passing at the age of 98.

Helen Schreider, an iconic figure in the world of exploration, died on February 6 in Santa Rosa, California, at the age of 98 due to complications from a stroke. Best known as half of the adventurous duo with her husband Frank Schreider, who together made history by traversing the entire length of the Americas in an amphibious jeep named La Tortuga, Helen's story remains one of passion and perseverance amid a male-dominated field. The couple's incredible journey spanned from the Arctic Circle all the way to the southern tip of South America, covered in an awe-inspiring documentary film and countless articles published in National Geographic magazine between 1957 and 1969. While Frank Schreider gained recognition in their shared exploits and was inducted into the prestigious Explorers Club in 1956, it took almost six decades before Helen was recognized, receiving her membership in 2015, after the club lifted its all-male membership policy. Helen, a talented artist, documented their travels with her drawings and photography, capturing the beauty and complexity of the places they explored. Her niece, Camille Armstrong, emphasized her aunt’s persistent spirit, noting that Helen pursued exploration out of sheer passion, often without the expectation of recognition. In addition to their adventurous pursuits across the Americas, the Schreiders embarked on explorations across continents, including India, Africa, and South America, blending their talents in film, writing, and art. Helen's legacy is one of inspiring exploration against all odds, representing the changes in recognition and inclusion within adventure and exploration fields, proving that the pursuit of knowledge and exploration knows no gender.
