Anne Carson, a distinguished Canadian poet, essayist and translator, has been awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature. At 76, Carson's work is known for its seamless blending of poetry, narrative and scholarly depth.

The Nobel Committee highlighted her as "bold and inventive," noting how her work engages in a playful dialogue with the classical tradition, forging new literary forms for the contemporary era.

Carson’s reaction to the news was humorously candid. Speaking to Icelandic broadcaster RUV, she joked that the judges were "crazy" and reflected that they had all become "crazy," expressing surprise yet delight.

The Nobel Prize, determined by a lifetime of contribution, carries a monetary award of 12 million Swedish kronor (about $1.2 million). It remains the most prestigious accolade for global literature.

Ingrid Carlberg, the Swedish Academy’s permanent secretary, called Carson’s announcement over the phone, noting she was in Iceland at the time, listening to the wind when she received the call. Carlberg added that Carson’s voice conveyed genuine happiness.

Born in Toronto in 1950, Carson resides in Michigan and has held Icelandic citizenship since 2022. Her career spans teaching classics for more than three decades while producing a body of work that often draws on ancient Greek themes.

Key works include The Glass Essay, Autobiography of Red: A Novel in Verse, Nox, Float, and the fiction‑essay The Beauty of the Husband: A Fictional Essay in 29 Tangos. Her 2021 graphic retelling, The Trojan Women: A Comic, and her translation of Sophocles’ Elektra—staged with Brie Larson—demonstrate her versatility across media.

Both Anders Olsson, chairman of the Swedish Academy’s Nobel committee for literature, and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney praised Carson’s innovation, noting her unique voice has reshaped how ancient stories resonate with modern audiences.
