In brief

In a strategic move to showcase Russia's alliances and economic strength, President Putin hosts the BRICS summit, engaging with emerging nations to challenge Western dominance after the sanctions imposed due to the Ukraine invasion.

After facing significant economic sanctions and diplomatic isolation from the West following its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Russia is stepping up its efforts to strengthen ties with emerging market economies. In a bid to project power and forge new alignments, President Vladimir V. Putin is convening the leaders of the BRICS group—Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—this week in Kazan, Russia. Notably, this year's conference, starting Tuesday, will also include the participation of Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates.BRICS represents a significant portion of the global economy, encompassing nearly half of the worldwide population and contributing over 35 percent to global economic output, adjusted for purchasing power. The summit is positioned as a robust demonstration of economic influence and is viewed by many analysts as an effort by Russia to consolidate a coalition that could counterbalance the traditional Western-centric world order. As Alexander Gabuev from the Carnegie Russia Eurasia Center notes, "This summit is about Putin punching back." The Russian leader aims to portray the ongoing conflict in Ukraine not merely as a territorial dispute but as a catalyst for transforming the international landscape and dismantling the hegemony of Western powers. Thus, the BRICS summit is not just a meeting of nations but a strategic maneuver to redefine global alliances in the post-Ukrainian war era.
