In brief

A chilling wave of threats from gang leaders in Haiti has culminated in increased violence and chaos, leading to international flight suspensions and a pervasive atmosphere of fear.

Haitian gang leaders have issued a grave warning to the public, and their actions have spoken volumes. Over the weekend, Joseph Wilson, a notorious gang figure known as Lanmou Sanjou, released a menacing message promising dire consequences for those who defy the gangs. This decree came from the Viv Ansanm coalition, which has plagued the nation with violence for months, announcing their ominous presence in public spaces. In a swift response to escalating violence, at least three U.S. planes were targeted in Port-au-Prince, leading to the closure of the Toussaint Louverture International Airport. This left many travelers stranded and prompted the Federal Aviation Administration to halt all American flights to Haiti for a month. American Airlines has indicated it may not return until February, with United Nations humanitarian flights also grounded. The alarming violence in Haiti extends beyond aviation. Tragically, Dr. Deborah Pierre, a urologist, was fatally shot in a brazen attack in Port-au-Prince, while her father also sustained injuries. Additionally, staff from Doctors Without Borders faced harassment and violent encounters, as a vigilante mob attacked them, resulting in the deaths of suspected gang members they were transporting for medical help.As the crisis unfolds, many parts of Port-au-Prince remain eerily deserted as citizens grapple with their fears of rampant gang violence and the government’s inability to restore order.
