The ongoing U.S. government shutdown could significantly disrupt travel across the nation, with the potential for longer airport wait times, flight delays, and cancellations if it persists. The shutdown started after lawmakers failed to agree on continued funding for various government services, resulting in essential personnel like TSA agents and air traffic controllers working without pay.
Travelers are still able to board flights, but longer lines and delays are expected at airports due to staffing challenges. Geoff Freeman, CEO of the U.S. Travel Association, noted that increasing shutdown durations often result in negative impacts, including maintenance issues at national parks and concerning delays in travel infrastructure upgrades.
Operational Considerations During a Shutdown
Despite the government halt, critical services at airports will continue. Approximately 13,200 air traffic controllers and over 61,000 TSA employees are still on duty. However, the situation may worsen if the shutdown prolongs, reminiscent of previous shutdowns which strained airport operations and led to an uptick in sick calls among security personnel.
In the past, instances like the 2018-2019 shutdown resulted in Miami International Airport temporarily closing terminals due to a significant drop in available TSA agents. Currently, airports are already experiencing a shortage in air traffic controllers, with around 3,000 vacancies reported.
Impact on International Travel and Immigration Services
International travelers can continue entering the U.S. with Customs and Border Protection personnel projected to remain at work. Passport and visa processing is largely unaffected by the shutdown, as the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services operates mainly on application fees. However, the E-Verify system for verifying employee eligibility has paused.
Access to National Parks and Cultural Institutions
National parks and Smithsonian museums were set to remain open at least through early October, with contingency measures in place to manage resources and visitor access. Generally, park facilities and memorials are expected to remain accessible, but closures could occur in areas without appropriate services during the shutdown.
As the effects of the government shutdown become more apparent over time, travelers are encouraged to stay informed and plan accordingly, while keeping an eye on developments that might potentially impact their travel experiences.
