In brief

The annual investment forum in Saudi Arabia showcased attempts by Gulf leaders to foster a stable business environment, despite ongoing regional upheaval.

At the Future Investment Initiative forum held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, senior officials emphasized their commitment to economic stability, largely avoiding the ongoing regional conflicts. Dubbed the "Davos of the Desert," the event saw leaders attempt to assuage investor concerns regarding the prolonged conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon, highlighting the region's economic attractiveness amid uncertainty. Khalid Al-Falih, the Saudi investment minister, addressed participants by recognizing the "human suffering" caused by the war while asserting that economic momentum remains robust. “The tailwinds are much stronger than the headwinds,” he proclaimed regarding the Gulf's economic outlook. Saudi Arabia, under Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, aims to diversify its economy away from its dependence on oil. This strategy aligns with recent efforts to ease social constraints and foster foreign relations, as evidenced by the United Arab Emirates’ normalization of ties with Israel prior to the escalation of violence after the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023.While the Gulf states themselves have stayed removed from direct engagement in the conflicts, there are underlying fears that an escalation could jeopardize their aspirations for development and stability. As the investment forum drew to a close, it was clear that regional leaders are banking on a sustainable business climate to navigate the turbulent waters of Middle Eastern politics.
