In brief

Anne Merriman, known as the "Mother of Palliative Care" in Uganda, died at her home in Kampala. She was instrumental in developing affordable pain relief methods and expanding hospice care across Africa, impacting thousands of patients and medical professionals.

Anne Merriman, a renowned medical doctor and a former nun, has passed away at the age of 90 in her home in Kampala, Uganda. She is celebrated as the "Mother of Palliative Care" for her groundbreaking efforts in making pain relief accessible to poor, terminally ill patients in the developing world. In the 1980s, while practicing in Singapore, Dr. Merriman observed the struggles of economically disadvantaged patients after their hospital discharge. The exorbitant cost of intravenous morphine made it difficult for many to manage their pain effectively. This led her to innovate a more affordable solution: powdered morphine. Working alongside a pharmacist at the National University of Singapore, she created a simple formula comprising morphine powder, water, and a preservative. This allowed patients to conveniently mix their medication at home, providing essential pain relief without the need for expensive intravenous administration.Dr. Merriman's contributions extended well beyond this invention. She founded Hospice Africa Uganda in 1993 and introduced a culturally adaptable hospice model that has been successfully replicated across the continent. Her work has reached nearly 40,000 patients and helped train around 10,000 healthcare professionals in 37 countries. This remarkable legacy is a testament to her dedication to improving the quality of life for those facing terminal illnesses. She died on May 18, with respiratory failure reported as the cause. Her cousin, Chris Merriman, confirmed the heartbreaking news. The impact of Dr. Merriman's work on palliative care continues to be felt, ensuring that her pioneering spirit will live on in the hearts of many who benefit from her life-saving innovations.
