In brief

As the political landscape in Syria shifts, activists aim to document war crimes and target the broader regime elements responsible for atrocities, even as they face difficulties in securing justice against Bashar al-Assad.

In a significant turn of events following the decline of Bashar al-Assad’s regime, human rights activists are seizing the opportunity to intensify their efforts towards justice for the numerous victims of human rights violations in Syria. With Assad reportedly taking refuge in Russia, the prospect of him facing legal proceedings seems dim. Nonetheless, activists dedicated to shedding light on the Syrian government's crimes maintain their resolve.Fadel Abdul Ghany, director of the Syrian Network for Human Rights, emphasized that the focus should not solely be on the ousted president but rather on the systemic mechanisms of oppression that facilitated the regime's atrocities. “We are targeting the system,” he asserted, underscoring the need to address the security forces, army, and the infrastructure that enabled crimes against humanity. The fallout from the Syrian civil war has spotlighted widespread human rights abuses, resulting in over 200,000 civilian deaths and at least 15,000 fatalities due to torture within the regime's prison network. Additionally, approximately 130,000 individuals remain unaccounted for, as documented by Abdul Ghany’s organization. With organizations such as the Commission for International Justice and Accountability playing crucial roles, efforts are ramping up to compile evidence and lay the groundwork for potential future prosecutions. As activists navigate the complexities of the legal landscape, the quest for accountability illustrates not only resilience but also a growing momentum in the movement for justice in Syria.
