In brief

In a significant operation on Friday, Guatemalan officials descended upon a compound operated by Lev Tahor, an ultra-Orthodox Jewish sect previously linked to allegations of child exploitation. The government has reported the rescue of at least 160 minors from the site, who are believed to be victims of human trafficking and various other crimes.

During a press briefing, regional prosecutor Dimas Jiménez y Jiménez revealed that while no arrests were immediately made, investigations are underway for serious charges, including human trafficking, forced pregnancy, and sexual abuse of minors. In an alarming development, prosecutor Nancy Lorena Paiz García mentioned that remains buried on the premises have been found, prompting further investigations into the suspicious deaths of minors connected to the sect. The raid was prompted by concerns raised when four minors managed to escape from the community last month and brought their alarming accounts to the attention of authorities. These individuals provided crucial evidence, including medical assessments, substantiating suspicions of trafficking-related abuses. A large-scale response team comprised of around 480 police officers, soldiers, and mental health professionals was mobilized to execute the raid, which involved securing the premises, removing minors from the compound, and searching for potential evidence of child pornography and buried remains. The investigation into Lev Tahor, which comprises about 500 members residing in a heavily fortified farm in the Santa Rosa department near Guatemala’s border with Mexico, marks a continuing effort by local authorities to combat concerns surrounding the sect’s reclusive operations and the safety of its minors.
