In brief

Tropical Storm Trami has made landfall in Vietnam, exacerbating the devastation it left in the Philippines, where it claimed at least 80 lives and displaced hundreds of thousands.

---Tropical Storm Trami arrived in Vietnam on Sunday, making landfall near the city of Danang, just days after it wreaked havoc in the Philippines, resulting in the deaths of at least 80 individuals. The storm in Vietnam was accompanied by maximum winds reaching 55 miles per hour, though this was below hurricane intensity. The storm transitioned westward across the South China Sea, leading to severe destruction in the Philippines, as reported by the Philippine Office of Civil Defense. The agency has confirmed that 66 more individuals suffered injuries due to the storm, with at least 34 individuals still unaccounted for. Widespread flooding impacted numerous provinces, displacing over half a million residents, damaging close to 28,000 homes, and disrupting power across more than 150 municipalities. As Trami continued to progress inland into Vietnam, the country’s meteorological authorities warned of significant risks for flooding and landslides along coastal regions, with expected rainfall totals reaching 16 inches in areas south of Danang by Monday night. In preparation for the storm's arrival, four airports in central Vietnam, including Danang International Airport, temporarily halted flights but were reopened on Sunday, according to the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam. Moreover, the threat of another tropical storm, named Kong-rey, loomed near the Philippines, exhibiting similar wind speeds and forecast to affect Luzon. Its trajectory might lead it toward the Ryukyu Islands in southern Japan thereafter.Last month, a different storm, Typhoon Yagi, claimed the lives of 24 people across China and the Philippines before making landfall in Vietnam, where it unleashed Category 3 hurricane-strength winds, leading to 49 fatalities as it moved inland. With the relentless storms causing tragedy in the region, the humanitarian response remains critical and urgent amid ongoing weather threats.
