Danish Zoo Seeks Donations of Unwanted Pets for Predator Diet

Aalborg Zoo engages community in unique feeding program as it prompts public to donate healthy pets.

A recently launched initiative by Aalborg Zoo in Denmark requests the public's help in donating their unwanted pets to nourish its predator inhabitants, further enriching the animals' diets.

Aalborg Zoo in Denmark is making headlines after launching an unusual appeal, inviting the community to donate healthy unwanted pets to sustain its carnivorous residents. The zoo is requesting live chickens, guinea pigs, and rabbits, asserting that these animals will be "gently euthanised" by trained personnel. Additionally, the zoo is open to receiving donations of live horses, with an attractive potential tax benefit for the former owners.

On their official Instagram account, Aalborg Zoo emphasizes the importance of replicating the natural food chain for carnivorous animals, which include lions, tigers, and the Eurasian lynx. The zoo explains that smaller livestock such as rabbits and chickens are vital components of the predators' diet, closely resembling their natural prey in the wild.

Visitors interested in donating can do so on weekdays, although there is a limit of four small animals at a time, and no prior appointment is necessary. For horse donations, specific conditions need to be met, including the possession of a horse passport and a clean health record dating back at least 30 days. Successful horse donors are rewarded with a tax deduction.

Pia Nielsen, the deputy director of Aalborg Zoo, shared insights about the zoo's long-standing practice of feeding carnivores with smaller livestock. "Providing a natural diet is crucial for our carnivores, which is why we welcome donations of animals that must unfortunately be euthanised for various reasons. This initiative is well-received in Denmark, and many of our visitors and partners appreciate the chance to assist."

As the conversation about animal welfare continues, this initiative raises important questions regarding how zoos manage their dietary practices and the ethical implications of such programs.
