A 26-year-old German backpacker, Caroline Wilga, has expressed her deep gratitude after being rescued from the harsh conditions of Western Australia’s outback following nearly two weeks of being lost. Found after 11 nights alone, Wilga, who had survived on rainwater and sought refuge in a cave, described her experience as a transformative ordeal.
In her first statement post-rescue, Wilga recounted the accident that led to her predicament, explaining that she lost control of her van and exited the vehicle in confusion after hitting her head. After being located and airlifted to a hospital in Perth, she thanked everyone involved in her search and rescue effort through a heartfelt message posted on social media.
“I want to express a huge thank you from the bottom of my heart – a thank you that truly comes from the depth of my soul,” she stated. Despite having basic supplies in her car, she recalled moments of disorientation that led her to wander off into the bushland. “I lost control of the car and rolled down a slope,” she detailed, reflecting on how this led to her disorientation and ultimately, getting lost.
Wilga emphasized her newfound connection to the local community, stating, “Western Australia has taught me what it really means to be part of a true community,” recognizing the compassion she received during her ordeal.
The backpacker was found over 30 kilometers from where she had left her van, having been spotted by local motorist Tania Henley, whom she affectionately dubbed her "saviour and angel." Henley recounted seeing Wilga in a fragile state, suffering from exhaustion and dehydration, which further showcased the severity of the conditions she endured throughout her journey.
Wilga’s resilience was highlighted by her recognition of the support she received during her darkest moments, crediting the hope and belief of the community as her driving force to survive. “I am certain that I survived only thanks to this incredible outpouring of support,” she reflected, acknowledging the importance of human compassion in times of crisis.
The police underscored the role of sheer luck in her discovery, with acting inspector Jessica Securo sharing the urgency of the search efforts that ultimately led to her safe recovery. Wilga plans to recuperate fully as she processes the life-changing experience that has not only tested her endurance but also deepened her appreciation for community and kindness in the face of adversity.
