Controversial Deportation of Kilmar Ábrego García Sparks Immigration Debate
The White House reaffirms that Kilmar Ábrego García, a Salvadoran national mistakenly deported from the US, will never return, igniting heated discussions on immigration laws.
A Salvadoran man who was mistakenly deported from the United States will "never" reside in the country again, according to statements from the White House. Kilmar Ábrego García was sent back to El Salvador after being accused of ties to the notorious MS-13 gang, which his lawyer strongly denies.
The White House press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, maintained a firm stance regarding García's deportation, referencing a protective order his wife filed against him that cited domestic violence. "If he ever ends up back in the United States, he would immediately be deported again," Leavitt stated, reiterating that he is a gang member and addressing domestic violence allegations.
García, who lived in Maryland prior to his deportation on March 15, was sent to a prison in El Salvador amidst increasing tension between President Trump’s administration and the judiciary over immigration policies. A Maryland judge had previously ruled that his removal violated a 2019 court order preventing his deportation, and the Supreme Court upheld this ruling, stating the administration must help facilitate his return.
Despite these developments, El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele claimed he lacks authority to facilitate García's return. Meanwhile, a US senator visited El Salvador seeking access to García but was denied, while making appeals for justice on his behalf.
In response to the controversy, the White House also highlighted a tragic case involving the murder of Rachel Morin, reportedly by an illegal immigrant from El Salvador, stirring national dialogue on immigration and public safety. The dramatic events have shed light on the complex and often contentious nature of US immigration policy and its enforcement.
