Notes written by the individual who opened fire on an immigration facility in Texas indicate he was specifically targeting ICE agents and did not intend to harm detainees, according to officials.
One detainee tragically lost their life and two others were critically injured as a suspected sniper began firing at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) center in Dallas on Wednesday. The suspected gunman later died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
At a news conference, acting US attorney for the Northern district of Texas, Nancy Larson, identified the shooter as 29-year-old Joshua Jahn from Fairview, Texas.
Findings suggest Jahn aimed to maximize lethality against ICE personnel and property damage at the facility, with plans to minimize collateral damage to detainees and innocent bystanders, Larson explained. Evidence, including handwritten notes found at the shooter's residence, points to thorough pre-attack planning.
One note from Jahn stated, Hopefully this will give ICE agents real terror, to think, 'is there a sniper with AP rounds on that roof?
The victims of the attack have not yet been publicly identified; however, Mexico’s foreign ministry confirmed that one of the injured is a Mexican national. Fortunately, no law enforcement officers were reported injured or killed during the events.
Larson described the scene, highlighting Jahn's calculated choice of a date when ICE transport vehicles were active, which he exploited for his attack. The overall intent was clearly to terrorize ICE personnel and disrupt their operations, aligning with the definition of terrorism. Investigators report no links to organized groups, purely focusing on Jahn's expressed disdain for the federal government, especially pertaining to immigration enforcement.
In recent months, violent rhetoric against ICE has escalated, which federal officials argue must cease to prevent further incidents like this. A rise in tensions surrounding immigration policies under the Trump administration has been underlined as a contributing factor to this violent act.
