Billy Joel Shares Positive Updates Following Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus Diagnosis
The iconic singer-songwriter reflects on his health progress and upcoming concerts despite his condition.
Billy Joel has recently shared that he is feeling "good" two months after revealing his diagnosis of Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH), a rare brain condition. In an appearance on Bill Maher's Club Random podcast, the celebrated musician discussed how he is still working through his symptoms, particularly related to balance. "They keep referring to what I have as a brain disorder, so it sounds a lot worse than what I'm feeling," Joel remarked, showcasing a resilient outlook on his current health situation.
Due to his condition being aggravated by recent performances, the 76-year-old had to cancel a series of concert dates planned for May. NPH, which involves a build-up of fluid in the brain and mainly affects individuals over 60, can impact hearing, vision, and mobility, creating significant challenges for those affected. However, Joel remains hopeful, as he is undergoing specific physical therapy aimed at improving his health and everyday functioning.
In a heartfelt social media update, Joel’s wife Alexis stated their family is thankful for the swift diagnosis and excellent care, expressing hope for a speedy recovery. Accordingly, Joel has postponed 17 concert performances scheduled across North America and Europe for 2025 and 2026, including major shows at renowned venues like Murrayfield in Edinburgh and Anfield in Liverpool.
Previously, the piano maestro, known for timeless hits such as "Uptown Girl" and "Piano Man," had just concluded a historic ten-year residency at Madison Square Garden, ending with a performance in February 2025 that saw him take a fall on stage due to a mishap with his microphone stand. In light of his recent health concerns and commitment to recovery, Billy Joel is taking the necessary steps to prioritize his well-being while keeping his fans informed about his journey.
