FBI Discovers Historic Cache of Explosives at Virginia Farm

The FBI's recent raid on a Virginia farm has resulted in the largest seizure of explosive devices in the agency's history, raising concerns about far-right extremism and public safety.

In a significant investigation, the FBI announced it has uncovered more than 150 explosive devices on a farm in Isle of Wight County, Virginia, marking what is believed to be the largest cache of such devices ever seized by the agency. The raid, which took place on December 17, resulted from a tip-off regarding Brad Spafford, a local man accused of stockpiling homemade ammunition and weapons on his property.

According to investigators, a variety of bombs were found, including some hidden in a backpack labeled "#nolivesmatter," suggesting a connection to extremist anti-government sentiments. Spafford, who shares the farm with his wife and two young children, has been charged with possessing an unregistered short-barreled rifle but more serious charges might be forthcoming.

Documents from the court detail Spafford's alarming behavior, including using images of President Joe Biden as target practice and expressing disturbing wishes regarding Vice-President Kamala Harris. He reportedly has sought sniper-rifle training at a local shooting range and continued his bomb-making activities even after losing three fingers in a previous explosive accident.

The investigation was prompted by an informant who had worn a recording device during a visit to Spafford's property, revealing disturbing plans to potentially fortify the farm for armed resistance. The explosives, including so-called "pipe bombs" and a volatile substance known as HMTD, were found both inside a detached garage and unsecured throughout the house, posing a significant threat, especially with children present.

Mr. Spafford's attorney has dismissed the claims of danger as speculative, pointing out that his client has no prior criminal history. The judge overseeing the case ordered the release of Spafford under electronic monitoring, although this decision is currently under review as the government seeks to detain him further.
