Far-Right Candidate Georgescu Challenges Election Ban in Romania
Calin Georgescu's appeal triggers protests and controversy over democratic integrity in Romania's electoral process.
Romanian far-right leader Calin Georgescu has initiated an appeal against the Central Electoral Bureau's (BEC) decision to exclude him from the presidential race scheduled for May. The Constitutional Court judges are set to evaluate Georgescu's appeal on Tuesday afternoon, with a verdict anticipated by Wednesday evening. The BEC voted 10-4 to reject Georgescu's candidacy, citing non-compliance with legal standards and accusing him of failing to uphold democratic values.
The BEC's decision followed the annulment of last November's first round of elections, where Georgescu was leading, due to reports of Russian influence via social media platforms like TikTok. In a recent appeal, Georgescu asserted that the BEC had overstepped its authority, insisting that the prior court ruling should not influence his eligibility for the May elections. He labeled the ban as a "direct blow to the heart of democracy worldwide" in his social media statements.
Following the decision, disturbances erupted in Bucharest as hundreds of Georgescu's supporters gathered outside the BEC offices, resulting in clashes with law enforcement. The chaos led to property damage, with at least four individuals detained amid the unrest. Georgescu addressed the public through a video, praising Romanians but cautioning against violence, expressing a commitment to a positive future for the nation.
Georgescu's ally, George Simion, leader of the far-right Alliance for Uniting Romanians (AUR), characterized the political landscape as akin to a coup d'état and called for drastic measures against those responsible. In light of his provocative remarks, Simion now faces an investigation from Romanian prosecutors for inciting violence but has since retracted his statements, claiming they were metaphorical.
Earlier this year, Georgescu was detained while attempting to register as a presidential candidate, inciting mass protests across Bucharest. His rise to prominence has been marked by strong criticism of the EU and NATO, and he has garnered support from international figures, including allegations from U.S. Vice-President JD Vance that the election cancellation was based on unsupported claims. Prominent voices such as Elon Musk have also criticized the judicial actions taken against Georgescu, raising questions regarding the state of democracy in Romania.
