The Deadly Journey of Migrants on “The Beast”

Migrants enduring perilous treks through Mexico face extreme dangers as they board the infamous freight train known as “The Beast,” a sign of the desperation driving their migration.

The treacherous journey on freight trains symbolizes the extreme risks migrants encounter in their pursuit of a better life. As pressures mount amidst shifting immigration policies, tragic stories emerge, revealing the urgent need for comprehensive solutions.

Migrants making their way through Mexico toward the United States are confronting unimaginable hazards, particularly when they opt to travel aboard a freight train known as “The Beast” or “La Bestia.” Designed for transporting goods rather than people, this train has garnered a reputation for its severe dangers. Each year, thousands of migrants, mainly from Central America and Venezuela, climb onto its moving cars, fully aware that a single miscalculation could lead to devastating consequences.

Traveling atop “The Beast” is fraught with peril. Individuals find themselves clinging precariously to the train’s cars, maneuvering through tight spaces while grappling with the train's incessant movement. Reports reveal that overcrowding often sparks violent pushes and tragic mishaps. A security expert recounted to the New York Post a particularly harrowing incident: "I once showed a video during my talks of someone being sliced in half after falling onto the train wheels," he stated, underscoring the dangerous nature of this journey. Alarmingly, close to 500,000 people risk their lives on these treacherous “death trains” annually, highlighting the desperation that fuels their migration.

The surge in migrants has notably increased as people brace for expected changes in immigration policies under the incoming President. Witnesses near train stations, like Claudia Rios from Durango, have reported a marked rise in individuals attempting to board, with groups exceeding 200 people at times. Rios described a stark change in behavior among migrants, noting, "They seem more aggressive now; it’s as if the kind-hearted individuals have already crossed." This shift highlights not only the urgency of their plight but has also led to visible strains within migrant groups, with some families including children and individuals in wheelchairs amid the chaos.

In Texas, Governor Greg Abbott is implementing a new strategy aimed at addressing the immigration crisis. Following prior efforts, which included razor-wire barriers and transporting migrants to sanctuary cities, Abbott's latest initiative encompasses a provocative advertising campaign targeting potential migrants. Billboards with unsettling messages, such as “How much did you pay to have your daughter raped?” and “Coyotes lie. Don’t risk your family’s safety,” have been strategically placed in Mexico and Central America. The ads, crafted in multiple languages, serve as stark warnings intended to dissuade individuals from undertaking this dangerous journey. “The message is clear,” Abbott stated during a press briefing in Eagle Pass, “Do not put your life at risk only to be arrested and deported.”

Amid these dire circumstances, organizations such as WOLA are shedding light on the escalating violence faced by migrants. Documented incidents of kidnappings and extortion are rising significantly, marking this as one of the most perilous times in recent history for those in transit. WOLA also claims that the complicity of certain Mexican authorities in these acts of violence exacerbates the threats faced by migrants.

The harrowing trek on “The Beast,” in conjunction with the ominous warnings displayed on billboards, paints a bleak picture of the migrant crisis and its profound implications of survival and desperation. As immigration policies evolve and the human toll of these journeys continues to escalate, these events invoke critical discussions about the complexities and repercussions of migration in the modern era.
