Despite recent seismic activity, Santorini aims to revive its tourism sector as cruise ships return to the island.
In the wake of thousands of small earthquakes, the enchanting island of Santorini in Greece is making a determined effort to bounce back and attract tourists. Known for its stunning views and vibrant culture, Santorini experienced a surge in seismic activity that has shaken the confidence of some travelers. However, local residents are hopeful as the first cruise ships of the season docked in late March, marking the potential recovery of the island's crucial tourism sector.
Cruise ship arrivals signal optimism, with over 40 vessels expected this month alone, indicating a projected 10 percent rise in cruise visitors from the previous year, according to the cruise ship owners’ union. Nevertheless, the local hospitality sector is bracing for a challenging year, with bookings reportedly down about 30 percent compared to 2024.
Alexis Yannoulatos, who operates several hotels including Blue Dolphins and Grand View perched on the caldera, noted a recent uptick in tourism. "We are seeing some movement in the past couple of weeks," he shared, though he foresees April being a tough month for revenue. Currently, hotel occupancy is about 30 percent, with hopes for an increase to 50 percent as summer approaches.
The island, once recovering from pandemic implications, sees this seismic activity as an unforeseen hurdle. Local business owners are optimistic that as the tremors subside, visitors will return to enjoy the breathtaking landscapes, picturesque beaches, and rich history that make Santorini a coveted destination.
