Tens of thousands of Brazilians joined protests in cities across the country on Sunday to express their outrage against a bill which could grant ex-President Jair Bolsonaro amnesty.
Bolsonaro was recently convicted for plotting a coup and has been sentenced to 27 years in prison, yet his allies in the Chamber of Deputies are fast-tracking a bill that may allow him and other co-defendants to escape jail time.
Protesters also voiced their frustration over a constitutional amendment that would complicate criminal proceedings against lawmakers, with many holding placards declaring Congress to be shameless.
The bill requires Congress members to approve in a secret ballot any charges against a fellow lawmaker, which critics have dubbed the Banditry Bill. While its supporters argue it’s essential to protect lawmakers from judicial overreach, it has sparked widespread condemnation.
Sunday’s protests saw diverse participation from trade unions, social organizations, and left-wing parties, drawing substantial crowds in major cities. Many attendees echoed the chant no amnesty as they demanded justice.
At Rio de Janeiro’s protest, renowned musicians like Chico Buarque, Gilberto Gil, and Caetano Veloso performed in support of the demonstration, which drew more than 40,000 participants according to one estimate.
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva expressed his solidarity with the protesters on social media, emphasizing the public’s rejection of impunity.
The ongoing protests reflect a polarized political landscape in Brazil, showcasing the deep divisions within society regarding Bolsonaro's legal troubles and the proposed legislation. Recent surveys indicate that public opinion on Bolsonaro’s imprisonment remains sharply divided.
