A federal grand jury in the US state of Virginia has indicted former FBI Director James Comey on two charges related to his testimony to Congress. The indictment alleges that Comey lied during his September 2020 testimony regarding whether he authorized the leak of classified information to the media.

Mr. Comey declared himself innocent, expressing 'great confidence in the federal judicial system'. The charges come shortly after former President Donald Trump called for more aggressive investigations into his political opponents, including Comey.

The case is led by Lindsey Halligan, the new US Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia. Comey's arraignment is scheduled for October 9, 2025. He faces one count of making false statements and another of obstruction of justice.

During his testimony, Comey had claimed he did not authorize anyone at the FBI to act as an anonymous source regarding his conversations with Trump, which included discussions about an investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.

Comey maintains he has not lied under oath. If convicted, he could face up to five years in prison.

The indictment reflects ongoing controversies surrounding Comey's tenure as the FBI director, noted for overseeing significant investigations that involved the former president.

Comey commented in a video statement ahead of his arraignment, affirming, We will not live on our knees, and you shouldn't either. And, I am innocent. So, let's have a trial. Following the indictment, Trump labeled Comey 'one of the worst human beings' to have served in his position.
