Investigation Launched in South Korea Over Unconsented Kiss Involving BTS Star Jin
South Korean police are questioning a Japanese woman accused of kissing BTS member Jin without consent during a public fan event last year.
The South Korean police have initiated an investigation into a 50-year-old Japanese woman accused of kissing Jin, a member of the world-renowned K-pop group BTS, without his consent during a fan event last year. The incident occurred in June 2024, marking Jin’s public celebration following his military service discharge.
At the event in Seoul, Jin, whose real name is Kim Seok-jin, was offering hugs to fans when the woman unexpectedly kissed him on the cheek. Video footage showed Jin appearing visibly uncomfortable following the incident, which prompted formal complaints to be filed online, spurring authorities to take action.
The Songpa police station in southern Seoul confirmed they have identified the woman with the help of Japanese law enforcement. If she agrees to the police summons, she could potentially face charges of sexual harassment. While specific details about the woman remain undisclosed, South Korean media report that she expressed pride on social media about the interaction with Jin.
Hybe, the management company for BTS, has not commented on the situation. The incident raises important discussions regarding fan behavior and consent, especially considering the historical tensions between South Korea and Japan.
BTS, known for their massive global appeal, has gathered a dedicated fanbase named the “BTS Army.” All members of the group, including Jin, were required to complete military service, leading to a temporary halt in the band’s activities. Jin was the first member to fulfill his service duty and is set to reunite with his bandmates as they return this year.
