Clinton Bailey: The Guardian of Bedouin Heritage Passes Away at 88

An American-Israeli scholar dedicated decades to capturing the essence of Bedouin culture through oral traditions.

Summary of Clinton Bailey's extensive work and impact on preserving Bedouin traditions before his recent passing.

Clinton Bailey, an esteemed American-Israeli academic celebrated for his unwavering commitment to preserving the ancient customs of Bedouin tribes, died on January 5 at the age of 88, in his home in Jerusalem. His son confirmed that the cause of death was heart failure.

Bailey, originally from Buffalo, dedicated approximately 50 years to documenting the rich oral heritage and rituals of the nomadic Bedouin communities in the Negev Desert and Sinai Peninsula. Equipped with a camera and tape recorder, he traversed the harsh desert landscape, often joining the tribes on their migratory journeys, to capture their poetry, stories, and cultural practices.

Describing the urgency of his mission, Bailey highlighted the impending modern changes that were breaking into Bedouin life, driven by urbanization and the introduction of technology. He expressed, “I decided to try to capture that culture,” reflecting on the profound transformation he witnessed. His extensive collection, which includes 350 hours of audio recordings and numerous photographs, was donated to the National Library of Israel, where it is considered an invaluable archive of Bedouin heritage and wisdom, increasingly absent in today’s younger generations.
