Putin and Trump Discuss Ukraine: Energy Attacks Halted, Ceasefire Elusive

In a recent call, Putin and Trump agree on stopping energy attacks but fail to reach a comprehensive ceasefire.

Putin's reluctance for a full ceasefire raises questions about Russia's commitment amidst ongoing conflict.

In a consequential exchange, Russian President Vladimir Putin has opted against an immediate full ceasefire in Ukraine, favoring only a pause in attacks on the country's energy infrastructure. This decision came during a call with US President Donald Trump, who had recently brokered a comprehensive ceasefire agreement in collaboration with Ukraine while in Saudi Arabia. According to Putin, a lasting truce would hinge on terminating foreign military support and intelligence sharing with Ukraine, a condition previously dismissed by Ukraine's European allies.

While Trump reported that their conversation was “very good and productive,” and hinted at the beginning of peace talks, the outcomes indicated a setback for the Trump administration compared to prior expectations. A US delegation had previously secured a consensus from Kyiv for an "immediate" month-long ceasefire during their meetings.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed openness to a truce centered around energy facilities but sought clarification on what was discussed between Trump and Putin. He stated the need for detailed communications to understand the proposals made. Trump later communicated his commitment to continuing negotiations with the intention of ending the "horrible War between Russia and Ukraine."

In the wake of last week’s discussions in Jeddah, Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized that the onus was on Russia following Ukraine's approval of the ceasefire proposal. However, the subsequent White House announcement left the previous agreement unacknowledged, instead highlighting a ceasefire concerning energy infrastructure as a prelude to broader peace negotiations.

The Kremlin has raised concerns about the feasibility of any agreement with Kyiv, declaring that the cessation of foreign support is a crucial prerequisite for discussions. As both leaders entrusted their delegates to engage in lower-level talks for a more enduring arrangement, uncertainty surrounds the future of negotiations, encompassing either further US-Russian dialogue or direct discussions between Russia and Ukraine.

As the dynamics unfold, Ukraine appears skeptical of Putin's motives, suspecting he may be delaying while placing stringent conditions on any potential resolution. The implications of this ongoing situation continue to cast a long shadow over the conflict.
