In a significant issue concerning merchandise laws, Warner Bros. Studio Japan LLC has recalled their replicas of the iconic sword of Godric Gryffindor after it was revealed that these items violated Japan's strict weapon regulations. The full-sized replicas, measuring 86cm (34 inches) and designed for display, were sold from May 2023 until late April 2024. Despite their initial clearance for sale, authorities notified the company in November that the replicas were legally categorized as actual swords due to their sharpness. Over 350 units, priced at approximately 30,000 yen ($200), were sold at Tokyo's Warner Bros. Studio Tour, the largest indoor Harry Potter attraction in the world.

Harry Potter Sword Replicas Recalled in Japan for Weapon Law Violations
Replicas of Godric Gryffindor's sword from the Harry Potter franchise have faced legal issues in Japan due to their sharpness.
The company has since issued a recall, urging customers to reach out for refunds. Under Japanese law, swords and knives exceeding 6cm (2 inches) in sharpness are prohibited for public carrying, with violators potentially facing a two-year prison sentence. Such stringent regulations highlight Japan’s effort to maintain low violence levels, even as incidents involving weapons occasionally arise.
