Tragic Avalanches Claim Lives of Five Skiers in the French Alps
Devastating incidents in Val-Cenis and Haute-Savoie spark renewed concerns about off-piste skiing safety.
In the heart of the French Alps, sorrow struck as five skiers lost their lives in two fatal avalanches on Wednesday. Local officials confirmed that the first avalanche occurred in Val-Cenis, located in the south-eastern Savoie region, where four Norwegian skiers tragically perished. Among them, three Norwegian men died at the scene, while a fourth, a female skier, succumbed to severe hypothermia and cardiac arrest shortly after being transported to a local hospital. This group was part of a larger ensemble of seven skiers, and the remaining three members emerged unscathed.
Mayor Jacques Arnoux of Val-Cenis spoke to AFP about the incident, revealing that each skier was equipped with an avalanche beacon during their venture into the backcountry. "It was an avalanche of great size which was triggered outside the ski area," he noted, emphasizing the inherent risks associated with off-piste skiing, which takes place in unmarked and unmaintained areas.
Meanwhile, in a separate incident further north in the Haute-Savoie region, a Swiss skier—a 30-year-old woman—lost her life while skiing near Chamonix. She was with her brother, who later required hospitalization for tests, and their father, who remained unharmed. All three skiers were reported to have been utilizing anti-avalanche airbags while they navigated off-piste terrain in the Mont Blanc massif mountain range.
In a prelude to Wednesday’s tragedies, another skier—a 55-year-old Brazilian-Portuguese—had already lost his life in a "very large" avalanche on Mont Blanc’s off-piste section just the day before, raising alarms about the safety of winter sports enthusiasts venturing into hazardous unmarked regions. The combined fatalities across these incidents have reignited discussions surrounding avalanche awareness and safety measures in the popular ski regions of Europe.
