A severe avalanche has resulted in the death of a skier near Mont Blanc, igniting concerns over skiing safety in the region.
The 55-year-old man was skiing off-piste in Les Grands Montets when a massive avalanche swept through the area on Tuesday afternoon. Local authorities confirmed his death from injuries sustained during the incident. The avalanche stretched 1km in length and 400m wide, catching the skier unaware before ski patrol teams had the chance to close off access to the hazardous area due to severe weather conditions. Initially misidentified as British, officials clarified his identity promptly, and his family has been notified of the tragedy. Fortunately, no additional casualties were reported following the avalanche, but the Haute-Savoie prefecture has issued warnings for skiers and hikers, advising them to be vigilant and heed safety recommendations as avalanche risks remain high this January.
