Tragic Wedding Crash: Lorry Plunges into River, Leaves 71 Dead in Ethiopia

A devastating accident claimed the lives of wedding guests in southern Ethiopia, highlighting road safety issues.

At least 71 people have tragically died after a lorry, reportedly carrying wedding guests, fell into a river in the southern district of Bodas in Ethiopia on Sunday. The Sidama Regional Health Bureau confirmed that the vehicle plunged into the water after missing a bridge, with local official Wosenyeleh Simion indicating that overloading contributed to the accident's severity. According to the Sidama Police Commission, the fatalities primarily included 68 men and 3 women. The accident scene, shared on social media, showcased rescue efforts as well as heartbreaking images of victims covered in tarpaulins. Unfortunately, road accidents continue to plague Ethiopia, with many incidents attributed to over-speeding and violations of traffic laws. Authorities have promised further investigations into this tragic event.

In light of this incident, concerns about road safety in Ethiopia have resurfaced, as the country witnesses thousands of fatalities caused by traffic accidents every year.
