US Military Dismisses Greenland Base Commander for Disavowing Vice-President's Comments
Colonel Susannah Meyers is relieved of her position after her email distancing herself from JD Vance's statements on Denmark's security spending.
The US Space Operations Command has announced the dismissal of Colonel Susannah Meyers, the commander of Pituffik Space Base in Greenland, citing "a loss of confidence in her ability to lead." This decision came after an email surfaced in which Col Meyers explicitly distanced herself from Vice-President JD Vance’s recent comments criticizing Denmark's inadequacy in security spending for Greenland.
On a trip to the Arctic territory, Vance contended that Denmark had not adequately supported Greenlanders and emphasized the need for increased security provisions. In response, Col Meyers expressed that Vance's statements were "not reflective" of the sentiments at the military base. Military.com, which published the email, reported that the authenticity of the document was validated by the US Space Force.
Chief Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell linked the firing of Col Meyers to her actions undermining the chain of command, indicating that such conduct is intolerable within the Department of Defense. Following her dismissal, Colonel Shawn Lee will assume command of Pituffik Space Base.
During Vance’s visit, he also reiterated former President Donald Trump's controversial interest in the potential annexation of Greenland, a notion met with robust opposition from both Greenland and Danish authorities. Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen of Denmark has firmly stated, “You can’t annex other countries,” highlighting her government’s commitment to strengthening its military presence in the Arctic and promoting collaboration with the US for regional defense.
Despite having the right to pursue independence since 2009, recent polling indicates that the majority of Greenlanders favor self-governance while rejecting any proposition of joining the United States. The geopolitical dynamics in the region continue to evolve, showcasing a strong sentiment among Greenlanders for autonomy from Denmark while navigating complex international relations with the US.
