DONETSK REGION, Ukraine (AP) — A Russian glide bomb struck the village of Yarova in eastern Ukraine as residents waited in line to collect their monthly pensions on Tuesday. The attack resulted in at least 24 fatalities and 19 injuries, primarily comprising elderly citizens, according to the Ukrainian Emergency Service.

In response to escalating violence in Ukraine, especially involving airstrikes, Poland's armed forces have entered a heightened state of readiness to protect its airspace and ensure the safety of its citizens. The operational commander stated that all necessary protocols have been activated, with both Polish and allied aircraft conducting operations to secure the region.

The tragic incident unfolded around 11 a.m. in Yarova, a village less than 10 kilometers (6 miles) from the front lines, further underlining the peril faced by civilians in conflict zones. Witnesses recalled the chaos as explosions rocked the area where the elderly had gathered for their pensions. One local resident, Hennadii Trush, described the devastating scene, sharing that his wife was killed during the attack while waiting to collect her bedridden mother-in-law's pension.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the brutal attack and called on the international community to hold Russia accountable through economic sanctions. He emphasized the need for a united global response to prevent further civilian casualties and demanded action from global leaders, including the United States and European nations.

As the war progresses, reports indicate that more than 12,000 civilians have lost their lives since the conflict began three years ago. The recent increase in aerial assaults has raised international concerns regarding the humanitarian impact on the region's populace, prompting discussions among U.S. and European officials about potential new sanctions against Russia to address these ongoing attacks.

Despite the dangers, many locals remain in their homes due to financial constraints or obligations to care for relatives. The situation in Yarova exemplifies the challenges faced by civilians, who often find themselves in life-threatening circumstances while addressing their essential needs.
