Deadly Airstrikes Hit Kyiv Amid Peace Talks Uncertainty

At least nine fatalities and over 60 injuries reported from the recent airstrikes in Kyiv, marking a significant downturn in the ongoing conflict as diplomatic efforts waver.

Russian forces launched a significant missile and drone assault on Kyiv in the early hours of Thursday, resulting in the deaths of at least nine individuals and injuring over 60 others, according to Ukrainian officials. This attack marks the deadliest assault on the capital since the previous summer. Reports from the ground indicate that explosions echoed throughout the night, with thick plumes of brown smoke rising into the sky as day broke. One missile struck a two-story apartment building, causing emergency services to work diligently in search of survivors amidst the debris. An adjacent five-story building was left without windows and disarrayed.

Svitlana Vodolaha, a representative of the emergency services, reported at 8:30 a.m. local time that they had just rescued another individual from the wreckage. Andriy Yermak, chief of staff to Ukraine's president, shared a video on social media depicting the destruction, condemning Russia's target of civilian districts.

In addition to Kyiv, drone and missile strikes also impacted Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, where at least two people sustained injuries in a residential area. The complete casualty count from this latest round of attacks across the nation remained unclear during the early morning hours.

This strike is among the most severe occurrences of the war against Kyiv, hearkening back to last July when a missile assault resulted in the deaths of 41 people and significant damage, including an attack that destroyed a children’s hospital. The recent missile launches coincided with a pivotal moment during the ongoing conflict, which escalated following Russia's major invasion in February 2022.

Previously, a temporary truce announced by President Vladimir Putin during Easter seemed to serve more as a symbolic gesture rather than a genuine ceasefire as no missile or drone attacks were reported during the holiday. Nevertheless, on the same day as the airstrikes, planned peace discussions slated for London were undermined by the United States' decision to abstain from attending, raising concerns about the status of peace negotiations.

U.S. policy has shifted under the current administration, aligning closer to Kremlin narratives, a departure from prior approaches towards Ukraine. Over the previous week, officials from the U.S. administration have hinted at an intention to withdraw their support for the peace discussions, emphasizing a proposal requiring Ukraine to concede territories gained by Russia, with vague guarantees about its future security.
